Rookery Bay Reserve, Shell Island Road Fishing

Shell Island Road is the Rookery Bay Research Reserve's roadside access to Henderson Creek, a mangrove-lined tidal creek that runs into Rookery Bay south of Naples. From the primitive boat ramp at the end of the road, the Monument Point Trail leads to the Children's Monument on the creek bank, and the reserve itself says the trail is frequently used by visitors to reach recreational fishing on the creek. This is wild backcountry water: snook, redfish, mangrove snapper and spotted seatrout are the fish the reserve names as most popular, with tarpon, black drum and jacks possible. NOAA's nearest station shows two uneven highs and lows a day, usually about two feet apart and up to three on the biggest tides, and moving water is the key. Access is open dawn to dusk. No facilities are listed, and alligators and crocodiles live in the reserve.
