Battery Worth Picnic Area Beach, Fort Pickens Fishing

Battery Worth Picnic Area Beach is a quieter slice of the Fort Pickens shoreline, set beside a picnic area with restrooms and a historic gun battery. You fish the open Gulf surf, away from the lifeguarded swim beaches.

The picnic area is on Fort Pickens Road in the Fort Pickens Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore, west of Pensacola Beach. The National Park Service runs it.

• Entrance fee: the Fort Pickens Area requires one, and the park says credit cards only
• Hours: March 1 to October 31, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.; November 1 to February 28, 5 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Parking: lots along the road serve the beach; overnight parking is not allowed
• Walk: a short sandy walk from the lot to the water

Think surf fish, with the usual Panhandle rhythm.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano and whiting in the first trough as the water warms; bluewater visitors like cobia pass close on calm days
• Summer (Jun-Aug): whiting, Spanish mackerel when bait is near the beach, and sharks and rays in the troughs
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the strongest pompano window, plus redfish and black drum
• Winter (Dec-Feb): slower, with whiting and the odd redfish or drum on mild days

Surf tackle is the whole game here.

• Pompano and whiting: a two-hook bottom rig with a pyramid weight, tipped with fresh shrimp or sand fleas
• Redfish and drum: a fish-finder rig with cut mullet or a whole shrimp, cast past the second bar
• Spanish mackerel: a small silver spoon or jig worked fast when birds are working
• Bring a sand spike and a long rod, 9 to 12 feet, for clearing the trough
• Bring your bait; digging in the national seashore is not an option

Escambia County has one small high and low on most days, so the tide does less than the wind and the surf.

• Moving water at dawn or dusk is best
• A light onshore breeze with clean green water fishes well for pompano
• Strong southerly wind roils the surf and weeds up the troughs
• Calm, clear water suits bait fishing; it is also easy to see rips
• After a front, expect the bite to turn on late

The beach is not lifeguarded, so you are responsible for your own safety.

• The park warns the area is at high risk for rip currents; check the flags and conditions first
• Never wade deep with a rod in hand; keep waves at ankle depth
• Summer lightning is fast and dangerous on open sand
• Shuffle your feet for stingrays
• Access: sandy paths from the lots, with no boardwalk confirmed

• No shade on the beach itself, so bring water and sun protection

• Stop at a Pensacola Beach bait shop on the way in for shrimp or sand fleas
• Walk away from the picnic crowd for the best water
• Dawn is the best light and the quietest time, but plan around the park's opening hour
• Fish the lee of any sand bar after a blow for the first calm trough
• Leave before the park closes; overnight parking is not allowed

Gulf Islands National Seashore is managed by the National Park Service.

• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required to fish in the park unless you are exempt; the licensed Fort Pickens pier is the exception
• Fishing is prohibited at the seashore's designated swim beaches when lifeguards are on duty; this stretch is not one of them, but check posted signs
• Anglers targeting sharks from shore need the free FWC shore-based shark permit
• Commercial fishing is prohibited in seashore waters
