Matlacha Bridge Fishing

The Matlacha Bridge carries Pine Island Road over the narrow Matlacha Pass channel into the colorful fishing village of Matlacha, and it has been called the fishingest bridge in the world for generations. Tide rushes through the cut between Pine Island Sound and Charlotte Harbor, and the pilings hold snook, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, redfish, trout, black drum and summer tarpon, with evening sessions under the lights on a moving tide the local favorite. The present drawbridge opened in 2012, and repairs after Hurricane Ian had it opening for boats again in 2026. Bring a bridge net and heavy leader. Parking is limited: free at little Bat House Park by the bridge, open dawn to dusk, or paid at gated Matlacha Park, open 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. You are fishing beside a busy road, so keep your gear tight to the rail.
