Tropical Point Park is a small Lee County waterfront park at the end of Tropical Point Drive in St. James City, on the south end of Pine Island, looking out over the lower reaches of Matlacha Pass. The county's own page reminds visitors that a saltwater license is needed to fish from shore here, and the mangrove-lined water in front of the park is classic Southwest Florida backcountry: redfish and trout on the grass, snook along the mangroves, and sheepshead and black drum around shell and structure in winter. NOAA's Tropical Homesites station, right beside the park, predicts two uneven highs and lows on most days, usually one to two feet apart, so fish the moving water. The park is open dawn to dusk, with free but limited parking, restrooms and a kayak launch. Bring bait, bug spray and patience.
