Fee to fish: Per-vehicle fee to drive and fish along Wildlife Drive (checked Sep 27, 2026)

J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge protects the mangrove backwaters on the bay side of Sanibel, and its four-mile, one-way Wildlife Drive lets you park beside tidal water and fish the estuary from the bank. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service calls the drive good shore fishing and crabbing all year, with snook, redfish, spotted seatrout and sheepshead the common catches, and mangrove snapper, jacks, ladyfish and small tarpon around the channels and the water control structures. Fish a moving tide with live shrimp or a soft plastic cast to the mangrove edges and drop-offs. The drive charges a per-vehicle fee, is closed every Friday and closes between late afternoon and evening depending on the month. Give wildlife room, carry insect repellent and watch the soft mud and oyster edges.
