Atsena Otie Key Fishing

6.1· Beach · Cedar Key, FL

Free: No entry fee; reached only by boat or kayak (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Atsena Otie Key is the island just across the channel from downtown Cedar Key, the site of the original town and now part of the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allows shore fishing along the refuge's island beaches and names spotted seatrout, flounder, redfish, black drum, sharks, Spanish mackerel and tarpon. You reach it by kayak, a rented or private boat, or a boat tour from Cedar Key, then fish the sand beaches and the edges of the flats and oyster bars around the island. NOAA's Cedar Key station shows two uneven highs and lows on most days, with a daily range of about 2 to 5 feet, so time your trip for moving water and watch the current in the channel. The refuge is open sunrise to sunset. There are no services, so bring everything and plan to land on the beach.
