Fort Island Gulf Beach Fishing

Fort Island Gulf Beach is Citrus County's only Gulf beach, at the end of Fort Island Trail west of Crystal River, where a small sandy beach faces shallow grass flats and oyster bars. Hurricane Helene destroyed its fishing pier, boardwalk and picnic pavilions in 2024; in late 2025 the county was permitting a replacement pier and expected the full rebuild to take 12 to 24 months. Until it opens, fish from the beach and wade the flats for speckled trout, redfish and Spanish mackerel, with ladyfish, jacks and bonnethead sharks in summer and the odd tarpon rolling offshore. Fish the rising tide early in the day. Stingrays, oyster cuts and summer lightning are the main hazards.
