St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park Fishing

6.5· Beach· Sewall's Point, FL

St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park covers the north end of Jupiter Island, a wild barrier-island beach that is reached only by boat. Anglers who make the crossing work the open Atlantic surf from the sand, and a state-park write-up also names snook, snapper and sheepshead from the park's docks. Expect pompano, bluefish and the odd snook from the beach, whiting and jacks in the wash, and snapper and sheepshead around the dock pilings. Light spinning gear with sand fleas, shrimp or cut bait does most of the work, and a falling tide at dawn is hard to beat. Admission is paid per boat. The park keeps daytime hours, so plan the run around them. The hazards are the inlet's fast currents on the boat ride, rip currents in the surf, sun and no help close by.
