Sandsprit Park is a free Martin County park on the point where the Manatee Pocket opens into the St. Lucie River, beside Port Salerno and a short run from the St. Lucie Inlet. Anglers work the seawall walk and fishing pier on the river side and the boardwalk around the point for snook, spotted seatrout, mangrove snapper, sheepshead and black drum, with jacks, ladyfish, the odd tarpon and catch-and-release redfish. Live shrimp, pilchards and soft plastics do best on a moving tide, and fiddler crabs take winter sheepshead on the pilings. Tides are small, two a day, and freshwater from the St. Lucie can stain the water after heavy rain. The five-lane boat ramp is the county's busiest, so keep lines out of the ramp lanes, and head for the car at the first thunder.
