Kemp Channel Bridge Fishing

6.4· Bridge · Monroe County, FL

Free: Free to fish this Heritage Trail bridge (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Kemp Channel Bridge is an old railroad-era span alongside US 1 at mile marker 23.5, joining Summerland Key and Cudjoe Key, and the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail keeps it for walkers, cyclists and anglers. Below it a tidal channel runs between the Atlantic side and the backcountry, and the bridge is among the few fishing bridges in the Lower Keys that the state still keeps open. Mangrove and lane snapper, grunts and jacks feed around the pilings, winter barracuda hunt the current, and tarpon roll through in spring and summer. With the trail listed by Florida State Parks as open from 8 a.m. to sunset, plan a daylight trip on a moving tide, in the morning or late in the afternoon. Entry is free, and nothing is provided on site. Take care with traffic as you park, give bikes room on the deck and leave when lightning builds.
