Burney Park is a Nassau County beach park in American Beach, toward the south end of Amelia Island. From its parking lot a raised walkover crosses the dunes to open Atlantic sand, and the county lists fishing along with indoor showers, outdoor showers and picnic tables. Surf anglers come for whiting most of the year and pompano when the water warms, with redfish, bluefish and black drum moving along the bars in spring and fall and small sharks cruising on summer evenings. A two-hook bottom rig with shrimp or sand fleas covers the near trough; a longer cast with cut mullet reaches the bigger fish. The ocean here has two high and two low tides daily, and the moving water after low tide is the time to be there. Rip currents, stingrays and afternoon thunderstorms are the hazards.
