The Atlantic sharpnose is the small, gray, white-spotted shark most Florida surf and pier anglers catch first. They are common along both the Gulf and Atlantic beaches from spring through fall, cruising the troughs and bars and hanging around pier ends, and they feed eagerly on a rising tide, at dusk and after dark. A chunk of fresh cut mullet, menhaden or ladyfish on a fish-finder rig cast just past the first bar is the standard approach; they also pick up shrimp and squid meant for other fish. Medium tackle with 20 to 30 lb line, a short wire or heavy mono bite leader and a 4/0 to 7/0 non-stainless circle hook handles them easily. Shore-based shark fishing in Florida requires a free FWC shore-based shark fishing permit and specific gear and handling, and some shark species are prohibited and must stay in the water, so learn to identify sharks and check current FWC rules before keeping one. Keep hands clear of the mouth, control the fish by the body, and release it quickly in the wash.
