John's Pass Fishing

7.3· Inlet · Madeira Beach, FL

John's Pass is the inlet between Madeira Beach and Treasure Island, and its rock jetty at John's Pass Park on the Madeira Beach side is one of the classic snook spots on the Pinellas beaches. Tide pours through the pass between the Gulf and Boca Ciega Bay, pulling bait past the rocks: snook and tarpon in summer, mangrove snapper and sheepshead on the rocks, and Spanish mackerel at the mouth in spring and fall. Fish the moving tide, especially the outgoing early or late in the day. The concrete jetty walkway was destroyed in the 2024 hurricanes and has not been replaced, so you fish from bare rock; the city plans a new walkway, so expect construction once work starts. Expect heavy boat traffic, strong current and slippery footing.
