Bagdad Mill Site Park Fishing

Bagdad Mill Site Park is a quiet county park in the old mill village of Bagdad, with a fishing pier reaching into a narrow channel of the Blackwater River where Pond Creek joins it. It is a small-water, light-tackle spot rather than a big-fish destination.

The park is at 6953 Main Street in Bagdad, a few miles east of Milton, and Santa Rosa County runs it. The pier is on the river side of the 21-acre grounds, reached on the park's multi-use path.

Light to medium spinning gear with 10 to 15 lb line suits a small pier like this.

• Redfish and drum: cut mullet, shrimp or crab on a fish-finder rig, set on the bottom near the channel edge
• Seatrout: live shrimp under a popping cork, or a soft plastic on a 1/4 oz jig head
• Sheepshead: fiddler crabs or small pieces of shrimp on a small hook right against the pilings
• Flounder: a live minnow or mud minnow bumped slowly along the bottom
• Bring a long-handled net; the deck is close to the water but check the freeboard on the day

The Pensacola Bay area has one small high and low on most days, so the tide moves slowly and the river current is gentle.

• A moving tide fishes better than slack water, whichever way it runs
