Circus Bridge, Venice Fishing

Circus Bridge is a lit Intracoastal Waterway drawbridge in the middle of Venice, known locally for snook that gather under its lights at night. It is a quiet, low-key spot for anglers who like bridge fishing.

The bridge carries US 41 Business over the Intracoastal Waterway on the south side of Venice, between the mainland and Venice Island. It is a state road bridge managed by FDOT.

• Parking: locals use spots on both sides of the waterway, including the Nokomis Avenue trailhead and Golf Street on the west side; read the signs
• The bridge has a sidewalk, used by walkers and cyclists
• Which side of the bridge is best, and whether the sidewalk is wide enough to stand a rod on, was not confirmed
• The bridge was closed for a mechanical malfunction in April 2026; check that it is open before you go

The Intracoastal is brackish and moves with the tides, so the catch shifts with rain.

• Spring (Mar-May): snook and seatrout move up the waterway as it warms
• Summer (Jun-Aug): snook under the lights at night, plus mangrove snapper and jacks
• Fall (Sep-Nov): snook, redfish and ladyfish on the mullet run
• Winter (Dec-Feb): sheepshead on the pilings, black drum and seatrout on the cooler days

Night fishing under the lights is the local method.

• Live shrimp or pilchards on a 1/0 to 2/0 hook with a 20 to 30 lb fluorocarbon leader for snook
• A small white jig or swimbait cast along the light line
• Fiddler crabs or shrimp on a small hook near the pilings for sheepshead
• Keep the bait near the edge of the light, not in the middle of it
• A long-handled net or a drop net makes it easier to land fish from the bridge deck

The waterway is tidal; the Gulf tides give two uneven highs and lows on most days. Check the nearest NOAA station.

• Moving tide is best, with a strong current around the bridge piers
• Night, under the lights, is the best window for snook
• Dawn can also be good in the cooler months
• Heavy rain freshens the water and slows the bite for a day or two
• Wind matters less in the sheltered waterway

A road bridge is a busy place to fish; do not take risks.

• Stay on the sidewalk; keep rods, lines and gear clear of the traffic lane
• Watch for cyclists and walkers, and keep your lines tight
• The drawbridge opens for boats, so stand clear when the gates close
• Night fishing needs a headlamp, and care on the narrow walk
• Boat wakes can be strong near the piers

There are no facilities on the bridge itself.

The bridge is a state road bridge managed by the Florida Department of Transportation, and no fishing ban was found.
