Nokomis Beach Park Fishing

Nokomis Beach Park is a full-service county beach park with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Intracoastal Waterway on the other, a short drive north of the North Jetty.

• Classic southwest Florida surf fishing in the trough and over the outer bar.
• Boat ramps, a kayak launch and a fishing pier listed by the county.
• Lifeguards, restrooms, a concession, picnic shelters and a playground, so the whole family is covered.
• Beach wheelchairs are available from the lifeguards.

The park is at 100 Casey Key Road, Nokomis, reached over the Albee Road bridge.

• Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; the boat ramp is open around the clock.
• Parking: the seawall parking lot is closed to the public while it is used as a staging area for the North Casey Key Road project, and it may stay closed for the length of that project. Other park facilities are open.
• Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed from the lifeguards.
• Dogs are not allowed.

The Gulf side follows the classic southwest Florida surf calendar.

• Spring (Mar-May): pompano and Gulf whiting (Gulf kingfish) in the trough, Spanish mackerel and ladyfish on the bait, and the first snook along the beach.
• Summer (Jun-Aug): snook cruising the trough close to the sand at first light, jacks and ladyfish, and blacktip and other sharks after dark in warm water.
• Fall (Sep-Nov): mackerel and jacks on the fall bait run, redfish along the beach, and snook until the first cold front.
• Winter (Dec-Feb): pompano and whiting on calm days, with sheepshead and black drum more likely on the bay side.

Two rods cover it: a light spinning rod for the trough and a longer surf rod for the bar.

• Snook: a white bucktail or small swimbait walked along the edge of the trough at dawn, or a live whitebait on 30 lb leader.
• Pompano and whiting: a two-hook drop rig with sand fleas, shrimp or scented strips, cast just past the first break; pink or yellow pompano jigs also work.
• Spanish mackerel and ladyfish: silver spoons and small jigs thrown at diving birds.
• Sharks: heavy surf tackle, a long wire leader and circle hooks; an FWC shore-based shark permit is required.
• Bay side: shrimp on a knocker rig around the structure for sheepshead and drum.

Tides here are mixed: two uneven highs and lows on most days, only one of each on some days, with a small range, usually under 3 feet, so wave action and wind matter as much as tide height.

• Best: a rising tide at dawn, when bait and snook move right into the trough.
• Light east or south winds give flat, clear water that suits sight fishing for snook and pompano.
• A strong west wind brings surf and dirty water; the lure bite dies, though whiting keep feeding on bait.
• Summer: fish early; by mid-morning the beach fills with swimmers.
• Red tide can close the fishing down in bad years; check the FWC red tide status before you go.

This is a lifeguarded swimming beach first, so fish with care.

• Keep well away from swimmers and the lifeguarded area, and stop casting if people enter the water near you.
• Stingrays lie in the shallows; shuffle your feet when wading.
• Rip currents form on rough days; do not wade out past your knees in surf.
• Lightning: summer afternoon storms move in fast over the Gulf; leave the beach at the first thunder.
• Accessibility: beach wheelchairs are available from the lifeguards, and the park has restrooms and picnic shelters.

• Note: the park and lifeguard office was damaged, so the community room is closed to reservations until it is restored.

A few pointers for Nokomis Beach:

• Be on the sand at first light in summer; snook patrol the trough before the swimmers arrive.
• Walk the beach and look for dark, deeper cuts in the bar; pompano and whiting stack up in them.
• Sand fleas are the top pompano bait; bring fresh or frozen ones, and check the posted park rules before digging your own.
• When the Gulf is too rough, try the bay side of the park instead.
• With the seawall lot closed, arrive early on weekends to find parking.
• Rinse reels after every session; salt spray on this beach is heavy.

Nokomis Beach Park is managed by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources.

• Open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; the boat ramp is open 24 hours.
• County code bans fishing inside any swim area marked by buoys.
• No dogs.
• Smoking and glass containers are prohibited in county parks.
• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt.
• Shore-based shark fishing needs a free FWC shore-based shark fishing permit.
• Snook and tarpon have their own seasons and release rules; check FWC.
• Check current FWC rules for size, bag and season limits before keeping anything.
