Spot are small croakers with a dark shoulder spot and slanted stripes, a cool-water fish in Florida found mostly along the northeast coast from Jacksonville to Daytona and around the Panhandle piers and bays. They school in fall and winter off beach piers, in the surf troughs, around inlets and in the deeper channels of bays, feeding on worms and small crustaceans over sand and mud. A rising tide with a little current keeps them feeding. Use a double-drop bottom rig with size 4–6 hooks, 1–3 oz of lead and light spinning tackle with 10 lb line, baited with small pieces of shrimp, clam or synthetic strips, and fish right on the bottom. They are fun for children and good pan-fried, and a lively spot is also an excellent bait for bull redfish, cobia and big flounder. Their fins are only mildly spiny, but handle with a wet towel.
