Helen Mellon Schmidt Park is a small, lightly developed St. Johns County park on a sandy spit at Summer Haven, between the Matanzas River and the Summer Haven River just south of Matanzas Inlet, and the county lists shore fishing among its few amenities. You fish from the bank on either side: the Intracoastal channel runs along the west shore with a strong current, while the Summer Haven River side is shallower and calmer. Redfish, black drum and flounder are the mainstays, with sheepshead and trout in the cooler months and bluefish, jacks and snapper when bait floods through from the inlet. Cut mullet or shrimp on a fish-finder rig is the standard approach. The tide swings about three to four feet, and moving water is everything. A 0.6-mile road leads to a dirt lot with portable toilets, open dawn to dusk. Respect the current.
