Matanzas Inlet Fishing

7.2· Inlet · Marineland, FL

Free: Free park lots; no entrance fee at inlet beaches (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Matanzas Inlet, south of St. Augustine, is one of the last natural, unjettied inlets on Florida's Atlantic coast, and its north side lies within Fort Matanzas National Monument. Anglers fish the inlet beach, the ocean surf and the shoreline under the State Road A1A bridge for redfish, black drum, sheepshead, spotted seatrout, flounder and bluefish, with pompano and whiting in the surf and jacks and tarpon passing in summer and fall. Moving water is essential; the outgoing tide is the classic. The monument's small beach lots are free and open 6 a.m. to midnight, and the ocean-side ramp and lot reopened in September 2026 after rebuilding. Bring your bait, because collecting sand fleas or fiddler crabs in the monument is banned. Currents are dangerous, and fishing is banned from boardwalks and docks.
