Gulf State Park Pier, the 1,540-foot Gulf State Park Fishing and Education Pier in Gulf Shores, is the Alabama coast's best-known land-based spot for Spanish and king mackerel. From spring into fall regulars line the rails from the second sandbar to just past the halfway restrooms for mackerel, while the Octagon at the far end draws kings, cobia, redfish and bluefish. The shallow end gives pompano, Gulf kingfish, speckled trout and flounder, and sheepshead pick at the pilings in late winter. Clean green water and a moving current bring the bite. The pier is open around the clock, with a bait and tackle shop, rod rentals and a daily fishing fee that does not cover a license. Storms close it now and then, as Tropical Storm Bertha did in July 2026, so check with Alabama State Parks before driving over.
