Bayfront Park, Coden Fishing

Bayfront Park, Coden gives shore anglers a free, family-friendly stretch of lower Mobile Bay where the county itself lists fishing and crabbing. The rebuilt park pairs a sandy pocket beach with pavilions, restrooms and a playground, so it suits a relaxed afternoon with children as well as a dawn trout session.

The park is on Dauphin Island Parkway in the Alabama Port community, with a Coden mailing address, about three miles north of the bridge to Dauphin Island. Mobile County Parks runs it.

• Hours: daytime only; the county's park page gives 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and a sunset closing, while its newer notices say 8 a.m. to dusk, so go by the posted sign
• Parking: parking areas inside the park, beside the beach and pavilions
• Walking paths link the parking, the pavilions and the sand
• A new elevated boardwalk, finished in spring 2026, loops over the marsh to two covered pavilions; it is for walking and wildlife watching, not fishing

The water off the beach is the lower western bay, saltier than the upper bay but still swung by rain and river flow.

• Spring (Mar-May): speckled trout and redfish move onto the shallows as the water warms, and the first flounder show up
• Summer (Jun-Aug): trout early and late, white trout and croaker on the bottom, and ladyfish or the odd Spanish mackerel chasing bait
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the best season, with redfish, trout and flounder feeding hard on shrimp and mullet
• Winter (Dec-Feb): sheepshead and black drum around any rock or hard bottom, with trout on warm, calm afternoons

Light to medium spinning gear with 10 to 15 lb line and a 20 lb fluorocarbon leader handles nearly everything off this beach.

• Speckled trout: live shrimp under a popping cork, or a 1/4 oz jig head with a paddle-tail plastic
• Redfish: cut mullet or live shrimp on a Carolina rig, or a gold spoon worked parallel to the shoreline
• Flounder: a live bull minnow or a soft plastic bumped slowly along the bottom
• White trout and croaker: a two-hook bottom rig on small hooks with fresh dead shrimp
• Crabbing: a few baited drop nets or traps, which the county lists alongside fishing

Like the rest of Mobile Bay, this shore usually sees a single high and a single low each day, with a range of only one to two feet, and on a few days each fortnight the tide barely moves. The weather does more.

• North winds behind winter cold fronts pull water off the shallows and push fish toward deeper water
• A steady south wind stacks water against the beach and brings cleaner Gulf water up the bay
• Heavy rain upstate muddies and freshens the bay, and trout and reds then slide south toward Cedar Point and the passes
• Dawn and dusk beat the middle of a hot summer day
• Check a tide table for the lower Mobile Bay area before you go

The beach slopes gently and the park is built for families, but this is still open water on a busy bay.

• The pocket beach is also a swimming and kayak launch area, so cast well away from anyone in the water
• Shuffle your feet when you wade; stingrays bury in the sand
• Summer thunderstorms build fast over the bay; leave the beach at the first thunder
• Bring water and sun protection for long sessions on the sand
• Access: paths connect the parking, pavilions and restroom building, but the sand itself is hard going for a wheelchair

The rebuild added most of what a family needs for a day beside the bay.

• The pocket beach for swimming, kayak launching, fishing and crabbing
• An elevated marsh boardwalk (not for fishing)
• An outdoor rinse-off area
• Bring bait and ice; the county lists no bait shop at the park

• Fish the first hours after sunrise, before swimmers and paddlers fill the beach
• After a few days of south wind, the cleaner water often holds trout close to the sand
• Pop-up tents are discouraged on the beach, so plan on the pavilions for shade
• When the beach is crowded, Cedar Point Pier a few miles south makes a good second stop
• Fish from the sand, not the new marsh boardwalk, which is not meant for fishing
• Leave the cooler of beer at home: alcohol is not allowed in Mobile County parks

Bayfront Park is a Mobile County park, free for day use and closing at sunset.

• Fishing and crabbing are allowed from the shoreline and pocket beach; the elevated boardwalk is not for fishing
• No alcohol in Mobile County parks; pets must be leashed; fires only in the grills provided
• Keep lines clear of swimmers and kayakers on the beach
• An Alabama saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt; Alabama residents who are exempt (and anglers fishing only from a pier that holds a pier license) must still complete the free Saltwater Angler Registration.
