Fowl River Access Site Fishing

Fowl River Access Site is a little-known federal landing on the East Fowl River, a tidal, marsh-lined branch of the Fowl River system a few miles from open bay water. It suits an angler who wants a bank, a kayak put-in and some solitude rather than a busy pier.

• Speckled trout, redfish and flounder in brackish water
• A launch point for kayaks and other small boats

The site is on Rebel Road in Theodore, about a quarter mile north of the Delchamps Road intersection, right where Rebel Road crosses the East Fowl River. The BLM's Southeastern States District Office manages it.

• The BLM bought the 5.1 acres in 2022 with Land and Water Conservation Fund money, working with the Trust for Public Land
• A short unpaved drive leaves Rebel Road just north of the bridge, and a track leads on to the river bank
• It gives walk-in access to the adjoining BLM land along the river
• Small boats and kayaks can launch here
• No entry fee or opening hours are published, so follow any posted signs
• The site is still new, so expect a simple, unpaved feel

The water here is brackish, and the mix of fish follows how salty the river is.

• Spring (Mar-May): trout and redfish move up the marsh creeks as the water warms
• Summer (Jun-Aug): croaker, white trout and catfish on bottom baits, trout early and late in the day
• Fall (Sep-Nov): the best season, with redfish, trout and flounder chasing shrimp out of the marsh
• Winter (Dec-Feb): black drum and sheepshead near any wood or hard bottom, and trout in the deeper bends on mild days

Light spinning tackle with 10 to 15 lb braid or monofilament is plenty along this narrow river.

• Live shrimp under a popping cork, drifted along the grass edge, for trout and reds
• A 1/8 oz jig head with a shrimp-tail or paddle-tail plastic, worked slowly near the bottom
• Bull minnows on a Carolina rig, crawled along drop-offs, for flounder in fall
• Small pieces of shrimp on a two-hook bottom rig for croaker and white trout
• A kayak lets you reach the bends and creek mouths beyond casting range from the bank

Like most of coastal Alabama, this river usually sees one high and one low tide a day, with a small range and a few days each fortnight when it barely moves. Wind and rain often matter more.

• A falling tide drains shrimp and baitfish out of the marsh and is usually the best time
• After heavy rain the river runs fresh and dark, and saltwater fish slide toward the bay
• Strong north winds behind winter cold fronts drop the water level and push fish into deeper holes
• A south wind pushes higher, saltier water up the river
• Check a tide table for the lower Mobile Bay area

This is undeveloped marsh, so come prepared.

• Banks can be soft and muddy; watch your footing near the water
• Mosquitoes and biting flies are fierce in warm weather, so bring repellent
• Alligators and snakes live in coastal Alabama marshes; keep children and dogs close
• Leave at the first thunder of a summer storm, as there is little shelter
• Stay off the Rebel Road bridge and away from passing traffic
• Access: expect natural, uneven ground rather than paved paths or a railed deck

There is very little here beyond the land and the river.

• A hammock hanging area added by an Eagle Scout project in 2024
• No restrooms, bait or water listed, so bring everything you need
• Pack out all trash and fishing line

• Fish the first hours of a falling tide, when bait washes off the marsh flats
• A dry fall is when the river turns salty enough for trout and reds to stack up
• Bring live shrimp from a bait shop on the way, as there is none at the site
• Launch a kayak to reach quiet bends that see few other anglers
• Wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk for the bugs
• Use the hammock area for a break between tides rather than tying to trees elsewhere

The Fowl River Access Site is public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management's Southeastern States District Office.

• An Alabama saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt; Alabama residents who are exempt (and anglers fishing only from a pier that holds a pier license) must still complete the free Saltwater Angler Registration.
• Anglers under 16 are exempt from the license
• Check current Marine Resources Division rules for size, bag and season limits before keeping anything
