Princess Place Preserve is Flagler County's 1,500-acre slice of old Florida where Pellicer Creek meets the Matanzas River, and the county invites visitors to fish its salt marshes. Shore anglers can fish from the preserve's paddle launch, a small landing beside the Creekview Trail on a winding tidal creek, casting into the marsh channel from the bank. This is redfish and trout country: reds push up the creeks on the rising tide, seatrout hold in the deeper bends, and black drum, sheepshead and flounder turn up around shell and structure through the cooler months. Light spinning tackle with shrimp, a gold spoon or a soft plastic does the job. The moderate tide runs twice a day; the early flood and late ebb fish best. The preserve is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Expect soft, muddy banks, biting insects and summer storms.
