Billy Joe Rish Recreation Area Fishing

7.1· Beach· Gulf County, FL

The William J. "Billy Joe" Rish Recreation Area is a Florida State Parks day-use area on Cape San Blas, where the park stretches from the Gulf of Mexico across the narrow peninsula to St. Joseph Bay. The state says the day-use area offers a variety of saltwater fishing opportunities, and the setting backs that up: a Gulf beach for pompano, whiting and redfish in the surf, and a quiet bay shore with grass flats for seatrout, redfish and flounder. Boardwalks lead to the sand, and a tunnel under the road links the two sides. Fish the Gulf side on a moving tide with sand fleas or shrimp, and wade or cast the bay side at first light. There is a per-vehicle day-use fee, and the park closes at sunset. Watch for rip currents on the Gulf side and summer lightning.
