De Soto National Memorial Fishing

De Soto National Memorial is a small National Park Service site at the mouth of the Manatee River in northwest Bradenton, and the park allows fishing with rod and reel from its shores between sunrise and sunset. Small beaches sit on the point: De Soto Point Beach takes the current of the river and the waves of Tampa Bay, while the Cove Beach on the south side is sheltered. Snook, redfish and spotted seatrout feed along the shoreline and grass, sheepshead and black drum come in the cooler months, and Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and jacks chase bait through the river mouth. Fish a moving tide with live shrimp, a jig or a soft plastic. Entry is free, but cars may only use the park road and lot from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the mangroves and riprap are off limits.
