Channel Five Bridge Fishing

7.1· Bridge · Layton, FL

Free: Free fishing bridge; no fee to use it (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Channel Five Bridge is a short surviving section of the old Overseas railroad bridge beside US-1 at mile marker 71, between Fiesta Key and Craig Key. It is a free fishing bridge on the Overseas Heritage Trail, which Florida State Parks lists as open 8 a.m. to sunset, and the state's angling survey lists it as wheelchair accessible. Channel Five is a major pass between Florida Bay and the Atlantic, so the current is strong and the fish are varied: mangrove, mutton and yellowtail snapper on the bottom, barracuda and jacks in the flow, and tarpon, sharks and rays passing under the span. Fish the middle of the tide with live pinfish or cut bait on heavy rigs. A stretch of the trail nearby is closed for repairs, but the bridge and its parking lot are open. There are no restrooms, and heat, lightning and fast water are the hazards.
