Marler Bridge (Destin Bridge) Fishing

5.9· Bridge· Destin, FL

The William T. Marler Bridge carries US 98 across East Pass between Destin and Okaloosa Island, and the current that funnels under it holds fish all year. Anglers work the pilings and fender system for sheepshead, and report redfish and black drum on shrimp and pinfish, with gray snapper, spadefish and the odd grouper named by local charter guides around the span. A pedestrian path now runs along the bridge as part of the county's Bridge-to-Bridge Multi-Use Path, and one local guide says fishing from the bridge is free and legal as long as you stay within the posted locations. Fish the slack-to-moving tide and keep clear of boat traffic in the channel. The bridge is a busy highway, so watch your tackle and your back, and read the signs for where fishing is allowed.
