Okaloosa Day Use Area Fishing

Fee to fish: National seashore entrance fee, per vehicle or per person (checked Sep 27, 2026)

The Okaloosa Day Use Area is the eastern end of Gulf Islands National Seashore, a stretch of sandy bay shoreline on the north side of US 98 on Okaloosa Island, about 3.5 miles west of Destin. From the beach, or wading the sandy shallows of Choctawhatchee Bay, anglers target speckled trout, redfish and flounder; in the warm months Spanish mackerel, ladyfish and bluefish crash bait, and pompano feed over the sand in spring and fall. Live shrimp under a cork, small jigs and gold spoons all catch fish, ideally on a moving tide early in the morning or in the evening. Hours are 8 a.m. to sunset, the national seashore entrance fee applies, and there are restrooms, outdoor showers and picnic tables but no store. Pets are not allowed, kite surfers use the area from April to September, and lightning and stingrays are the main hazards.
