Jerry Melvin Beachwalk is Beach Access 4 on Okaloosa Island, a free Okaloosa County access with a paved lot, restrooms and showers on Santa Rosa Boulevard. The walkway leads to the open Gulf of Mexico, where local fishing guides describe surf fishing from the island's beach accesses, working from one access to the next. The usual plan is a long rod, a pompano rig with sand fleas or cut shrimp, and a walk along the trough behind the first or second sandbar. Expect pompano and whiting in the cooler months and spring, Spanish mackerel and jacks when bait runs the beach in warm weather, and the occasional redfish. Early morning is the quietest time. County beaches close an hour after sunset, and county rules ban shark fishing here. Rip currents are the main hazard, so check the flags.
