Blackburn Point Park Fishing

Blackburn Point Park puts a fishing pier and a waterside park right on the Intracoastal Waterway, beside a historic swing bridge that still opens for boats.

• Moving water in a narrow stretch of the Intracoastal, with the bridge structure nearby.
• Sheepshead around the structure in the cooler months, with snapper, snook and reds when it warms up.
• Restrooms, picnic shelters, grills and a boat ramp in the park.

The park is on Blackburn Point Road in Osprey, at the mainland end of the Blackburn Point Bridge, which opened in 1926 and still swings open for boats.

• Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
• Parking: not described in the county listing; the park serves its boat ramps, so arrive early on weekends. No fee is listed.
• Boat ramps for motorized and non-motorized craft, and a canoe and kayak launch, share the waterfront, so expect trailers at busy times.
• Leashed dogs are allowed.

The Intracoastal here funnels fish between the bays on every tide, and the structure holds them.

• Spring (Mar-May): the tail of the sheepshead run, redfish and trout on the edges, and jacks and ladyfish as bait arrives.
• Summer (Jun-Aug): mangrove snapper around the pilings and bridge structure, snook along the shoreline and the bridge shadows at night and dawn.
• Fall (Sep-Nov): redfish, black drum and snook feeding on the fall bait, with flounder on the sandy edges.
• Winter (Dec-Feb): sheepshead on the bridge structure and any pilings, black drum on the bottom, and trout in the deeper channel on cold days.

Current and hard structure mean you need enough weight to hold bottom and enough leader to handle barnacles.

• Sheepshead: fiddler crabs or shrimp on a short, strong 1/0 hook with a 1/2 oz egg sinker (knocker rig), fished tight to the structure.
• Snapper: small live shrimp or cut pinfish on 20 lb fluorocarbon and a small hook; lighten the weight as the tide slows.
• Snook and reds: live pinfish or shrimp free-lined or under a float along the shoreline; 30 lb leader for snook.
• Trout: a jig and soft plastic bounced along the channel edge.
• Ladyfish and jacks: small spoons and jigs cast into bait.
• A long-handled landing net saves fish at the pier.

Tides on this coast are mixed: two uneven highs and lows on most days, only one of each on some days, with a small range, but the narrow Intracoastal squeezes them into useful current.

• Best: the hour or two of strongest flow on either tide, when bait washes past the bridge.
• Slack water: switch to the pilings for sheepshead and snapper, which bite well as the current eases.
• Water clarity: clean, green water on a calm day is best; heavy summer rain can stain the Intracoastal for a few days.
• Night and dawn produce snook in the warm months; the park closes at 10 p.m.
• Cold fronts push trout and drum into the deeper channel.

The park is easy going on flat ground, but the waterway beside it is busy.

• Boat traffic: the Intracoastal is a working channel, and boats queue for the swing bridge; watch for wakes and never cast across the channel at passing boats.
• The ramp: keep clear of launching boats and trailers.
• Current: do not wade near the bridge; the flow is stronger than it looks.
• Fish from the park's pier and shoreline, not from the swing bridge, which carries road traffic on a single lane.
• Lightning: summer storms build fast; leave the pier at the first thunder.
• Heat: bring water and sun protection.
• Accessibility: the county lists paved trails; check the pier on arrival if you need a level, railed route.

Local know-how for the swing bridge:

• Sheepshead season peaks in the cool months; fiddler crabs out-fish shrimp once the fish get picky.
• Use the lightest weight that still reaches the bottom; too much lead and you will miss the soft sheepshead bite.
• When the bridge swings open, boats bunch up; reel in lines that cross their path.
• Snook hold on shadow lines and moving water at dusk; fish a live bait along any you can reach from the park in the warm months before closing.
• Pinfish around the pilings make the best live bait for snook; catch them on a small hook and a bit of shrimp.
• Weekends at the ramp get busy; a weekday morning is calmer for bank fishing.
