Oscar Scherer State Park (South Creek), Osprey Fishing

6.1· Backwater· Venice, FL

Oscar Scherer State Park, off US 41 near Osprey, protects South Creek, a tidal blackwater stream that runs on to Dona Bay. Florida State Parks says anglers can fish the creek for both freshwater and saltwater species, and a wheelchair-accessible fishing dock off the Lester Finley Trail in the South Creek Picnic Area is the easy way to do it. Because the water is brackish, the catch shifts with rain and tide: redfish, snook and seatrout can show up when the creek is salty, while bream and other freshwater fish take over after heavy rain. Fishing is allowed in designated areas only, so stay on the dock and the marked creek banks. Expect a quiet, shaded, family-friendly outing rather than a trophy hunt. Bring bug spray, and watch for storms.
