Christopher Wheeler Park Fishing

6.3· Backwater · Sarasota, FL

Christopher Wheeler Park is a small Sarasota County waterfront park on Siesta Key, off Old Stickney Point Road at the island end of the Stickney Point Road drawbridge over the Intracoastal Waterway. The county lists it for fishing and paddling, and it puts shore anglers on moving channel water beside the bridge. The bridge structure draws sheepshead through winter and into spring; mangrove snapper and snook show up once the water warms; redfish, black drum and spotted seatrout patrol the edges, and jacks and ladyfish run bait through the channel. Time your visit for the stronger run of the tide. It is a simple park with a kayak launch and picnicking, open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; no restrooms are listed. Mind boat wakes, the busy road and strong current near the bridge.
