Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach Fishing

Ted Sperling Park at South Lido Beach is the wild south end of Lido Key: a county park wrapped by the Gulf, Big Sarasota Pass and a mangrove bayou, a few minutes from St. Armands Circle. It gives shore anglers a pass, a surf beach and backcountry edges in one visit.

• Restrooms, picnic areas, a playground and unpaved nature trails.
• Summer snook on the beach at first light and winter pompano in the troughs.
• Quiet mangrove shorelines on the bay side for trout, reds and snapper.
• A strong-current pass, so it rewards careful, low-tide fishing.

The park is at the south end of Ben Franklin Drive on Lido Key, reached over the John Ringling Causeway from downtown Sarasota and around St. Armands Circle.

• Hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., per Sarasota County.
• Parking: lots inside the park, which can fill on busy weekends in season.
• The walk: short paths from the lots to the Gulf beach and around to the pass corner; the sand is soft.
• Bay side: Ted Sperling Nature Park, a separate section on Taft Drive with the same hours, has a kayak launch into the mangrove tunnels, with rentals from the county's permitted vendors; motorized boats may not launch there.
• Dogs are not allowed in the park.

Big Pass mixes Gulf and bay fish, and the beach corner changes with the season.

• Spring (Mar–May): Spanish mackerel runs, pompano in the troughs, whiting and the first snook along the beach.
• Summer (Jun–Aug): snook cruising the surf line at dawn, ladyfish and jacks in the pass, mangrove snapper along the bay edges.
• Fall (Sep–Nov): mackerel again, redfish and trout on the mangrove shorelines, flounder on the sand edges.
• Winter (Dec–Feb): pompano and whiting in the troughs, sheepshead around any structure, and trout in the deeper bayou edges.

Walk and cast rather than sitting on one spot; the fish move along the beach and the pass edge.

• Snook: live whitebait or a white bucktail or paddle-tail swimbait worked along the trough at dawn, 30 lb leader.
• Pompano and whiting: pompano jigs bounced back through the trough, or shrimp and sand fleas from a bait shop on a double-drop rig with a 2 oz pyramid sinker.
• Mackerel: small spoons and Gotchas when birds are working the pass.
• Trout and reds: soft plastics on a 1/4 oz jighead or shrimp under a popping cork along the mangrove edges.
• A light 7-foot spinning rod with 10-15 lb braid covers most of it.

Big Pass has mixed tides: NOAA's station in the pass usually shows two uneven highs and lows a day, sometimes only one, with a range of roughly one to two and a half feet, and the narrow pass speeds them into strong current.

• Best: lower stages of the tide, when you can fish the beach side of the bar without being near the channel.
• The falling tide drains the mangrove bayou and concentrates bait at its mouths.
• Clean Gulf water on light east winds is ideal for sight-casting snook at dawn.
• A west wind puts surf on the beach and colors the water; switch to bait then.
• Red tide can shut Sarasota's beaches down in bad years; check FWC's red tide status first.

This is a beautiful park with one serious hazard: the pass.

• Big Pass current is strong and unpredictable; do not wade out toward the channel, and never swim the pass.
• The county lists no lifeguards here.
• Boat traffic runs through the pass, especially on weekends.
• Shuffle your feet in the shallows for stingrays.
• Lightning: summer afternoon storms build fast; leave the beach at the first thunder.
• Heat and bugs: bring water and sun protection, and repellent near the mangroves at dusk.
• The paths are sandy; beach access is possible but soft sand makes wheelchair use hard.

South Lido is a full county park rather than a bare beach.

• Restrooms, picnicking, a playground and unpaved nature trails, per the county listing.
• At Ted Sperling Nature Park on Taft Drive: a kayak launch and wash station, a picnic pavilion and a restroom, with kayak and paddleboard rentals from permitted vendors.
• No bait shop on site; buy bait before you cross the causeway.
• Nearest supplies: St. Armands Circle, a short drive north, has food and drink.
• The park closes at 10 p.m., so plan evening sessions to finish by then.

Local know-how for the south end of Lido:

• Fish the beach corner facing the pass at first light in summer; snook cruise the trough within a rod length of the sand.
• In winter, walk the Gulf beach looking for the deepest trough and fish pompano jigs through it.
• Use the falling tide to fish the bayou mouths from the bay shoreline.
• Leave the swimming beach to swimmers; fish the ends of the park.
• Launch or rent a kayak at the Nature Park on a calm day for trout and reds in the mangrove tunnels.
• Pack everything you need; there is no bait or tackle in the park.

The park is run by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources.

• Open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; county code bans glass containers, and dogs are not allowed here.
• County code bans fishing inside any swim area marked by buoys.
• A Florida saltwater fishing license is required unless you are exempt.
• Shore-based shark fishing needs the free FWC shore-based shark fishing permit, and FWC bans chumming from the beach.
• Snook and tarpon have their own seasons and release rules; check FWC before keeping or handling one.
• Check current FWC rules for size, bag and season limits before keeping anything.
