Walton Rocks Beach Fishing

6.4· Beach · St. Lucie County, FL

Walton Rocks Beach is a St. Lucie County beach park on South Hutchinson Island, named for the dark coquina rock outcrops that run along the shoreline and out into the surf, and the county lists fishing among its uses. The rocks hold fish that plain sand beaches do not: snook along the edges in summer, sheepshead in winter and pompano, whiting and bluefish in the troughs between them from fall to spring. Fish the rising tide with sand fleas, shrimp or fiddler crabs, and throw jigs along the rocks early for snook. The 24-acre beach is also the county's off-leash dog beach, with restrooms, pavilions and picnic tables, and it is open dawn to dusk. It is unguarded, so watch for rip currents, slippery rocks and stingrays, keep bait and hooks away from loose dogs, and leave the beach when summer lightning builds.
