Tom Staed Veterans Memorial Bridge Piers, Daytona Beach Fishing

5.7· Bridge· South Daytona, FL

The Tom Staed Veterans Memorial Bridge, the Orange Avenue span over the Halifax River in Daytona Beach, was rebuilt as a tall concrete arch, and the county added fishing piers on both banks after anglers complained that the new bridge would cut them off from the water. The river here is part of the Intracoastal Waterway, brackish and tidal, so the catch follows the season and the rain. Expect sheepshead around hard structure in the cooler months, redfish and black drum along the edges, seatrout over the grass in spring and fall, and jacks, ladyfish and catfish when bait is moving. Fish a moving tide with shrimp or fiddler crabs on light gear. The managing body does not publish fishing rules for the piers, so read the signs. Watch traffic near the approach and summer lightning.
