Portland Park Landing, Freeport Fishing

5.8· Backwater· Freeport, FL

Portland Park Landing sits at the end of Portland Park Road, south of the State Road 20 bridge on the west bank of Alaqua Creek near Freeport. Walton County keeps a renovated single-lane ramp here with a dock along the creek, a pavilion, grills and picnic tables. The creek is wide and deep this far down and runs on to Choctawhatchee Bay, so the water is brackish and rain moves the fish: redfish, speckled trout and flounder are the saltwater catches reported for the area, with bream and bass in the fresher stretches. Anglers work live shrimp and soft plastics along the dock and the shoreline on a moving tide. The gravel lot takes around twenty vehicles, there is no fee and a portable toilet. Mind boat traffic around the ramp.
