U.S. 331 Causeway, Santa Rosa Beach Fishing

6.5· Bridge· Freeport, FL

The U.S. 331 causeway carries the highway across the south side of Choctawhatchee Bay beside the relief bridge, and for years local anglers fished its rock shoulders. After the new bridge was built, FDOT agreed to let parts of the causeway reopen for fishing, with Walton County taking on maintenance and signs marking the legal parking. You fish from the roadside edges at the northern end of the southbound causeway, on both the east and west sides, casting into moving water where the bay squeezes past the bridge opening. Redfish, speckled trout, flounder and sheepshead are the usual catches, with Spanish mackerel and jacks in the warm months. The water is brackish bay water, so the catch shifts with rain and river flow. Traffic is fast and close, so park only where signed and stay off the travel lanes.
