Bayou Bernard Park is a City of Gulfport park on Switzer Road in Handsboro, where a small fishing pier, a boat launch and boardwalk trails reach the edge of Bayou Bernard, a tidal, brackish bayou lined with marsh grass. James Hill Park next door adds more fishing piers, pavilions and a playground, and a boardwalk crosses the marsh between them. This is quiet backwater fishing: redfish and speckled trout along the grass edges and in the deeper bends, flounder in the fall, black drum and sheepshead around the pilings, and croaker and catfish in summer. After heavy rain the water freshens and bass and bream can turn up too. Live shrimp under a cork and shrimp or cut bait on the bottom work best, ideally on a falling tide. Watch for boats at the launch, mosquitoes in summer and lightning.
