Fred Urie Pier Fishing

6.6· Pier· Gulfport, MS

The Fred Urie Pier stands at the southernmost end of the Gulfport Harbor, the City of Gulfport's small craft harbor beside Jones Park, and it reaches out from the tip of the harbor wall over open Mississippi Sound water. Hurricane Zeta wrecked the old wooden pier in 2020; the city rebuilt it with concrete pilings and caps and stainless hardware, and it reopened in February 2026 with residents dropping lines from the new deck. Speckled trout and redfish cruise past on moving water, sheepshead and black drum hang on the pilings in the cool months, flounder pass through in fall, and croaker, white trout and catfish keep the summer rods busy. Live shrimp under a cork and shrimp or cut bait on the bottom cover most of it. Boats come and go from the harbor close by, and summer storms build fast over the Sound.
