Jones Park, Gulfport Fishing
6.9· Pier· Long Beach, MS
Jones Park is Gulfport's 60-acre waterfront park at the south end of US 49, beside the city's marina and the state port, and its fishing pier is one of the easiest places on the Mississippi coast to wet a line. Anglers catch speckled trout, redfish, flounder and sheepshead from the pier, with black drum, croaker, white trout and catfish making up the rest, and a few Spanish mackerel in summer. A popping cork with live shrimp, a bottom rig with shrimp or cut mullet, and fiddler crabs on the pilings in winter cover the seasons. The park has a fuel dock and bait shop, a comfort station, walking paths, a splash pad and pavilions, so it works well with a family along. Tides are small and daily, so wind and moving water count for more. Watch for marina traffic and leave the pier when summer storms build.
