Bayou Heron Pier, Grand Bay Reserve Fishing

6.6· Backwater· Jackson County, MS

Free: The launch is free; parking is limited and very high tides can flood the road (checked Oct 17, 2026)

Bayou Heron Pier is a free public boat launch and handicapped-accessible fishing pier at the end of Bayou Heron Road, about three miles south of the Grand Bay Coastal Resources Center, in the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve near the Alabama line. The reserve calls the pier suitable for fishing and crabbing. Bayou Heron winds through open salt marsh far from the big rivers, so the setting is wild: speckled trout, redfish and flounder feed along the marsh edges, with sheepshead and black drum in the cooler months and croaker and catfish in summer. Live shrimp under a popping cork is the standard rig, and a crab net is worth bringing. The water is very shallow at low tide, and very high tides can flood the road in, so check conditions first.
