The Highway 63 Pier is a Jackson County pier and boat ramp under the Highway 63 bridge over the Escatawpa River, near Elder Ferry Road on the east side of Moss Point. Here the lower Escatawpa winds through brackish marsh, much of it a state coastal preserve, so the water changes with the rain: after dry weeks, speckled trout, redfish, flounder and black drum move up from the Pascagoula, while floods bring fresh water and catfish, bass and bream. An earlier state inventory listed fishing and crabbing from the piers, and the county is improving the launch with state Tidelands money. Fish live shrimp under a cork along the bridge shade, or cut bait on the bottom. Watch for boats at the ramp and debris in the current after storms, and leave when thunder rolls in.
