Free: Free entry to the refuge trail, open sunrise to sunset (checked Oct 17, 2026)

The Jeff Friend Trail is a one-mile loop in Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, off Fort Morgan Road west of Gulf Shores, that runs through maritime forest to the quiet western end of Little Lagoon. The refuge itself suggests a short walk down this trail to fish the lagoon, and its canoe and kayak launch puts paddlers on the same water. Expect speckled trout, redfish and flounder along the grassy shoreline, with white trout and croakers in deeper pockets, all on light tackle and live bait or small soft plastics. The lagoon is shallow and clear and its tide is small, so fish any moving water, early and late in summer. Entry is free, the refuge is open sunrise to sunset, pets are not allowed, and there are no restrooms, so bring everything you need, including bait.
