Pine Beach, Bon Secour Refuge Fishing

6.2· Beach· Baldwin County, AL

Free: Free entry; the refuge is open sunrise to sunset (checked Oct 17, 2026)

Pine Beach is the undeveloped Gulf beach at the end of the Pine Beach Trail in Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, on the Fort Morgan peninsula west of Gulf Shores. Getting there means a two-mile walk each way on sand and gravel, past the western shore of Little Lagoon and the bridge over 40-acre Gator Lake, which is also open to fishing and holds saltwater and freshwater fish since hurricanes flooded it with salt water. The reward is empty surf where pompano, Gulf kingfish and redfish feed in the troughs, with speckled trout, flounder and summer Spanish mackerel. Go early on a calm, clear day with a light load. The refuge is free and open sunrise to sunset, dogs are not allowed, and parts of the beach are closed for nesting snowy plovers.
