Fee to fish: Small state park entrance fee per vehicle (checked Sep 27, 2026)

Perdido Key State Park is a stretch of undeveloped barrier island beach about 15 miles southwest of Pensacola, with boardwalks over tall dunes to the Gulf and access to Old River on the island's north shore. Surf fishing is the draw: pompano and Gulf whiting in the troughs in spring and fall, redfish along the bars, Spanish mackerel, bluefish and ladyfish when bait is close, and sharks in summer. Fish sand fleas or shrimp on a pompano rig in the first trough on a moving tide, with clean green water. The park opens at 8 a.m. and closes at sunset, and there is a small per-vehicle entrance fee. Stay off the dunes, which shelter the rare Perdido Key beach mouse, and watch for rip currents, stingrays and afternoon lightning.
