William R. Gaines Jr. Veterans Memorial Park Fishing

Also called Sunrise Park

William R. Gaines Jr. Veterans Memorial Park is a Charlotte County nature park on Edgewater Drive in Port Charlotte, where a fishing pier sits on mangrove-lined water at the edge of a preserve that runs south toward Charlotte Harbor. Older fishing guides call it Sunrise Park. It is quiet, sheltered saltwater: snook and mangrove snapper along the mangroves, sheepshead and black drum around structure in the cooler months, and juvenile tarpon, jacks and redfish moving through with the tide. Light tackle and live shrimp catch most of it; fish moving water, and early and late in summer. The park is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and the county lists restrooms, picnic tables, a nature trail and a kayak launch. The county's storm-recovery page for the park lists its pier and dock repairs as complete, and the pier is not on its list of closed piers. Bring bug spray.
