Fishing in Charlotte County
Summary
Charlotte County wraps around Charlotte Harbor, one of Florida's largest estuaries, where the Peace and Myakka rivers meet the Gulf; it also holds the Englewood end of Manasota Key and the northern part of Gasparilla Island. Anglers come for snook, redfish and trout in the harbor, tarpon in early summer (Boca Grande Pass, the tarpon capital, lies just to the south), winter sheepshead and black drum, and Gulf surf fish off Englewood. Hurricanes Ian (2022) and Helene and Milton (2024) hit the county hard: the El Jobean, Placida and Boca Grande fishing piers and the Laishley Park pier were still closed at last report, and the Boca Grande Causeway is posted private, so shore anglers lean on the US 41 bridges, city parks and Stump Pass Beach State Park.
Location and Access
Punta Gorda & the Peace River
- Character: downtown waterfront, the Harborwalk and the twin US 41 bridges at the mouth of the Peace River.

- Access: walk-on access from downtown parking; the Laishley Park pier was closed for repairs at last report.
Port Charlotte & the Myakka
- Character: the harbor's north shore and the tidal Myakka River.
- What it suits: redfish, trout and snook along mangroves and canals.
- Access: several county piers here, including El Jobean, were closed after the 2024 storms and are being rebuilt; check the county's facility status page.
Englewood & Manasota Key
- Character: Gulf beaches, Stump Pass and Lemon Bay.
- What it suits: surf pompano and whiting, beach snook in summer, bay-side trout and reds.
- Access: Stump Pass Beach State Park (small fee) and Englewood Beach at Chadwick Park.
Seasons & Species
| Season | Likely species (shore) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | Snook, redfish, trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel | Snook move from the rivers to the harbor and passes |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Snook, tarpon, mangrove snapper, jacks, bull sharks | Tarpon in the harbor and passes; night bridge fishing |
| Fall (Sep–Nov) | Redfish, snook, trout, jacks | Harbor redfish schools; often the best season |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Sheepshead, black drum, trout, pompano | Snook retreat up the rivers in cold snaps |
Methods & Tackle
- A 7-foot medium spinning rod with 15 lb braid and 20–40 lb fluorocarbon leader.
- Live shrimp, pinfish and whitebait on circle hooks for snook and reds.
- Soft plastics and popping corks for trout.
- Fiddler crabs and knocker rigs for sheepshead and black drum on bridge pilings.
- A bridge net for the US 41 bridges.
- Pompano jigs and double-drop surf rigs on Manasota Key.
Tides and Conditions
- Tides in Charlotte Harbor are small and often mixed; wind can move as much water as the moon, and north winds in winter drain the flats.
- The falling tide is usually the strongest current at the river mouths and bridges.
- Summer rains send tea-colored fresh water down the Peace and Myakka; fish move toward saltier water.
- Clean Gulf water on light east winds is best for the Englewood beaches.
- Red tide can reach the harbor and beaches in some years; check FWC's red tide status first.
Safety & Access
- Lightning: summer afternoon storms build fast over the harbor.
- Bridge fishing puts you beside highway traffic; stay inside the walkway and keep it clear.
- Strong currents run in Stump Pass and the new Milton's Pass; do not wade across.
- Stingrays in the shallows; shuffle your feet.
- Bull sharks are common in the harbor and rivers.
- Many piers were storm-damaged; obey fences and check the county facility status page before you go.
Tips
- Fish the US 41 bridges on a falling tide at night, on the up-current side of the lights.
- Keep the bridge walkway tidy; litter complaints nearly ended fishing there.
- Watch the harbor in fall for redfish tails on calm mornings.
- Tarpon season (roughly May to July) centers on Boca Grande Pass, a boat fishery; from shore, look for rolling fish at dawn.
- On a west wind, fish Lemon Bay rather than the Englewood surf.
- Buy live shrimp and pinfish before heading out; most parks do not sell bait.
- Check the county's pier status updates; El Jobean and Placida are being rebuilt.
Nearby
- Sarasota County – Venice Fishing Pier and the North Jetty at Nokomis to the north.
- Lee County – Boca Grande, Pine Island, Matlacha and Sanibel to the south.
FAQs
- Do I need a fishing license?
- A Florida saltwater fishing license is needed to fish from shore unless you are exempt or fishing from a pier that holds its own license for its visitors. Check exemptions and buy a license through FWC (myfwc.com).
- Is the El Jobean Fishing Pier open?
- No. It was damaged by fire in 2024 and then by Helene and Milton; the county has voted to rebuild it higher, but permitting and construction will take time.
- Can I fish from the Boca Grande Causeway?
- No. The causeway is owned by the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority and posted private, and the old Boca Grande Fishing Pier beside it was still closed at last report.
- Is fishing allowed on the US 41 bridges in Punta Gorda?
- Yes, under an agreement between the county and FDOT, as long as the walkway stays clear and clean.
- When is tarpon season?
- Tarpon are in the harbor and passes mainly from late spring into summer; check FWC's tarpon rules before handling one.
