Darst Park Fishing

5.5· Backwater · Punta Gorda, FL

Darst Park is a small Charlotte County boat-ramp park on the south bank of the Peace River east of downtown Punta Gorda, less than a mile upriver of the I-75 bridge. The county lists fishing here, and an old local tackle-shop tip is to fish the bank for redfish and snook; this part of the river also gives up sheepshead and seatrout in winter, black drum, jacks, juvenile tarpon in the warm months and young bull sharks. The water is brackish and shallow off the ramp, so fish moving water and cast toward the deeper edge. The boarding pier is closed after hurricane damage, with the county's repair timeline running into 2028, but the park is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and ramp parking runs around the clock. There are picnic tables but no restrooms listed, so come prepared, and stay well clear of launching boats.
