US 41 Bridges, Punta Gorda Fishing

6.8· Bridge · Punta Gorda, FL

The twin US 41 bridges carry the Tamiami Trail across the mouth of the Peace River between Punta Gorda and Charlotte Harbor, and their walkways are downtown's busiest shore fishing. The pilings and shadow lines hold snook year round, sheepshead and black drum in winter, mangrove snapper in summer, and redfish, jacks and the occasional tarpon or cobia at night. Fish the falling tide as the river drains into the harbor, especially after dark under the bridge lights. You will need a bridge net from the walkway. Fishing is allowed again after FDOT swapped its short-lived July 2026 No Fishing signs for No Littering signs; police enforce the litter rules and keep the walkway clear, and the ban could return if the mess does. Mind the traffic beside you.
