Chester Roberts Park Fishing

6.2· Backwater · Punta Gorda, FL

Chester Roberts Park is a tiny Charlotte County park on Melbourne Street in the community of Charlotte Harbor, where a small wooded lot opens onto the Peace River, just upriver of the north end of the US 41 bridges. The county lists fishing and a sand kayak launch here, a public opening on a shoreline otherwise lined with private docks. Expect snook and redfish along the shore, seatrout and sheepshead in the cooler months, black drum, jacks and ladyfish when bait moves, and juvenile tarpon in summer. Live shrimp under a cork or on the bottom catches most of it on a moving tide. There are no restrooms or listed parking, the park is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and private docks sit on both sides, so keep casts clear of them.
